Carnoustie is one of the courses every golfer wants to play. It has hosted eight Open Championships and two Women’s Opens, and it is known as Golf’s Greatest Test.
The first record of golf on this land dates to 1527. A 10-hole course by Alan Robertson followed in 1842, then an 18-hole course by Old Tom Morris in 1857. James Braid extended the layout in 1926, and that is essentially the links played today.
Look out for Hogan’s Alley at the 6th, the Spectacles bunkers at the 14th and the Island formed by the Barry Burn at the 17th. The closing five holes are among the toughest finishes in championship golf. Forward tees give golfers of every level a more comfortable way to take it on.
Around 300 Carnoustie residents emigrated to the USA in the early 1900s, taking club-making skills and golfing talent with them, which is why many American clubs can trace a line back here.
